There have been many civilisations laying claim for Paxos, from the Romans, Normans, Venetians, Ottomans and even Napoleonic France, each leaving its mark on the island. Its difficult to see Paxos was an island at war given the laid back relaxed nature of many of its inhabitants. In fact, legend has it that Poseidon struck Corfu with his trident causing its southernmost tip to break off to become a separate island, an island that became his ‘love nest’ to conduct an affair with the nymph, Amphitrite, hidden from his jealous wife.
