A brochure describing the attractions of the Ionian Islands to 13th century marauders might well have described Sivota on the south coast of Lefkada as ‘the perfect base for terrorising the local population. Completely land locked, the narrow entrance, with its high promontory (excellent cannon emplacements) is almost invisible from the sea and easily defended. Sheltered from any wind, there is good mooring at the head of the freshwater bay with excellent opportunities for raiding the vineyards, olive groves and villages in the immediate vicinity. The local population are noted for their vigour and husbandry skills certainly make valuable slaves!’

A few hundred years on, a more peaceful type of marine visitor is attracted to this enchanting inlet. The picturesque settlement of a few tavernas and shops is a popular anchorage for yachtsmen. What hasn’t changed over the centuries is the idyllic location.

Petros Gatzias, whose Italian forebearers drove the pirates out of the Ionian Islands five hundred years ago, owns an olive grove that looks down on the headland and the bay. It is an idyllic spot, secluded and quiet with a view that is simply breathtaking. Beyond the promontory is the small island of Arkoudi, mysterious Ithaka and the mountains of Kefalonia. It is just the sort of place where one would dream of building a house.
