The end of the “claw” of the dramatic Pelion peninsula almost seems to be seeking to reach out and clasp the mainland shore opposite, creating the sheltered inland sea of the Sagonitic Gulf whose eastern coastline consists of a series of coves and bays each with its own beach. Safe swimming, against a backdrop of forest and high mountains combine to create a quiet but fascinating holiday region perfect for families or groups of friends who like to mix relaxed seaside living with the exploration of this intriguing and beautiful region.

Either of the two recently built Horto Beach Villas would answer their requirements perfectly. Situated in the centre of the small village of Horto, the beach and tavernas are literally a few seconds’ walk from their door, and if even that’s a step too far on those days when complete relaxation is a must, each has its own swimming pool with ample space for enjoying the sun and letting the world pass by!

Both villas have two bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as a comfy sofabed in the lounge, an extremely well-appointed kitchen and a balcony overlooking the gardens and the pool – all with the sea just beyond.

Horto itself is an excellent base from which to explore the whole peninsula. In all its variety. The adventurous will want to take the incredible narrow guage railway which runs from the coast near the small resort of Kala Nera up to the traditional mountain village of Milies looping around steep crags and crossing spectacular gorges via a series of extraordinary bridges. If that’s not energetic enough there is a footpath beside the line that can be followed all the way back to the coast!

Further into the mountains half hidden amongst the chestnut and cherry trees equally historic settlements, some with small, local museums full of artifacts and displays of the Pelion’s colourful history. The Aegean coast with its rocky headlands enclosing picturesque beaches and bays is equally accessible from these villas, or leave the car behind and take a caique cruise to the small island just off the tip of the claw to visit the isolated old monastery. Perhaps hire your own boat for the day and explore the coast for yourself.
