One of the enduring charms of Paxos, that inspires people to return time and time again, is the quiet unspoilt
beauty of the interior of the island. Gaios, Lakka and Loggos all have a cosmopolitan ambience, derived in part
from their popularity with the sailing fraternity together with excellent waterfront tavernas, but the rest of the
island is a haven of tranquillity. Olive trees seem to have that effect; they should do given that they stand for
centuries, set apart from the rush of everyday life.
The Paxiots, perhaps more than any other Ionian islanders understand the need to measure time against the
ebb and flow of the seasons. Their houses, often set in gardens that are a riot of colour reflect this sense of
timelessness. Even when they build new houses, proportion, setting and ambience is much more important
than any economic consideration. So it is with the marvellous Villa Irida.
Open the gates of this secluded house surrounded by a traditional stone wall and one is immediately struck
by a sense of peace and privacy. The level of comfort is evident not only in the choice of
furnishings and the convenience of the well appointed kitchen but continues outside with a delightful swimming
pool surrounded by shrubs and mature trees. The villa is exquisitely furnished throughout and is based on two
floors. On the main upper floor, the entrance opens up to a large open plan living and dining room, which itself
opens to two large terraces, one overlooking the olive groves, the other at the rear looking towards the pool. Off
the living room is the fully equipped kitchen, the main double bedroom with en suite bathroom and a twin room
also with en suite shower room. Downstairs is a twin bedroom with en suite shower room.
Quiet and secluded it may be, but the house stands at the very centre of the island which means that the
magnificent west coast with its spectacular cliff scenery is easily reached. The coves and beaches of the east
are also nearby. Add in a whole network of delightful paths and tracks made for gentle exploring and you have
all the ingredients for a truly relaxing holiday.
