Lefkada:

Our programme in Lefkada has always been popular with our Ionian clients, who not only love the natural beauty the White Island has to offer but also because of its diverse breath taking landscape. Lefkada, is the fourth biggest island in the Ionian Sea situated close to the mainland, so close in fact, that it is assumed that the island was once attached to the mainland.

Today, Lefkada is still an island separated by the Drepanos Channel and linked only by a long causeway a floating bridge if you like and the only island that can be accessed by car. The island covers a 302.5km2 area with a population of approximately 22,879 people more of course in the summer months. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate: hot summers and cool wet winters which give it the wonderful lush green landscape the island is so famous for!

Lefkada takes its name from the brilliant white of the limestone rock, the Greek word for white. From the dramatic sea cliffs and the spectacular beaches of the west coast, across the rugged peaks of the interior mountains and down through fertile stream fed valleys to the gentler east coast with its wooded bays and quiet creeks, Lefkada is an island which has a scene for everyone!

Our programme on Lefkada is a varied one, offering waterside apartments, boutique hotels and a good selection of villas with pools.

When planning each islands collection of accommodation we are always looking out for new exciting properties to enhance the programme, so when exceptional villas come to our attention, we move pretty fast to ensure they become Ionian villas – this was certainly the case for the six fabulous villas which have been added to our 2012 portfolio. These delightful new additions are Villas Votsalo, Akrogiali, Thalassa & Flisvos, each one being two bedroom villas with their own pools and Villas Levanda & Olivia two three bedroom villas each with good size pools.

Four of these new additions can be found on Lefkada’s southeast coast at the beautiful Desemi Bay. The villas are set on a hillside location surrounded by olive groves, just below the villas there is private access to a small cove to swim with moorings for guests wishing to hire a motor boat, certainly recommended. Each villa has its own pool and a cool natural stone patio, perfect for lunches in the shade of the midday sun. The far reaching views from the villas are of Meganisi and in the distance the mountains ranges of mainland Greece. Early mornings bring breath taking sunrises as if you are being greeted personally by the day ahead of you. It won’t be difficult to find your favourite spot and while away the day with a good book or simply relaxing with your thoughts.

Villa Levanda & Olivia on the other hand are two three bedroom villas with their own pools in a beautiful setting in the village of Perigiali not far from the town of Nidri. Both villas have been designed to maximise the exquisite sea views and the interiors to enhance the magnificent space and light these villas have to offer. The village of Perigiali is a perfect base for exploring the island and all it has to offer. A short drive away is the bustling town of Nidri, fabulous for shopping or if you prefer an exhilarating evening of local nightlife!

For those of you who prefer more activity on holiday Lefkada has so much to offer such as wind surfing and dinghy sailing at Vassiliki Beach or kite surfing at Agios Ioannis Beach, enjoying a day out on the Three Island Cruise visiting Kefalonia, Ithaka & Meganisi or how about a visit to the Dimosari waterfalls especially during early or late season.

But let’s not forget Lefkada is renowned for its stunning beaches and the best of them can be found on the west coast in particular; Milos Beach, Agios Ioannis, Kathisma Beach & Porto Katsiki to name but a few.

As for Lefkada itself, the islands economy is very much dependant on tourism, olive oil production and fishing but it is also known for the beautiful traditional embroideries (called “karpeto” and “mantanies”) made in the village of Karia. Lefkada also produces a large variety of agricultural products due to the fertility of its lands. Olive oil, citrus fruits, honey, almonds, fish and wine are of excellent quality in Lefkada, don’t forget to order a half kilo or kilo of wine. Perfect to complement your meal!

Cuisine on the island is much the same as the other Ionian island each having their own speciality such as Kefalonian meat pie, Lefkada has its own favourites such as a traditional dish called “Eglouvis lentils”, the “salami” (sausage), the “savoro” (fish with herbs, raisins and garlic), the fish dish called “aliada”, the “soumada” (local sweet beverage) and mouth-watering sweets like the “mandolata” (nougat) and the “pasteli” (mixture of caramelized sesame seeds and honey).

This is in addition of course to the traditional dishes of Greece, such as Mousakka, Kleftiko, Pasticho & Stifado and the world famous Souvlaki! Try them all with a Horitatiki salad (country Greek salad) and of course all washed down with that local wine!

We hope we have given you a brief encounter with Lefkada and what she has to offer, much more information can be found on our website or talk to a member of our team who will be happy talk through any questions you may have.

With a fabulous choice of villas with pools, waterside apartments and stunning boutique hotels Lefkada has something to suit everyone the difficulty will be in choosing which one! The choice is yours!
