Fiskardo is quite unique in that it was left virtually undamaged during the great earthquake of 1953, that devastated most of the historic buildings on the rest of the island of Kefalonia. Unlike other villages, it has retained an authentic traditional ambiance, which is one of the reasons visitors return year after year. Much of the beauty of Fiskardo can be attributed to the very pretty harbour with its fishing boats moored alongside flotillas and the more luxurious yachts of visitors who are simply passing through for a day or so. Loved by yacht owners, artists, celebrities too, the village has an international feel with visitors attracted to the area from all over the world.
Fiskardo has to be one of Kefalonia’s most charming and charismatic destinations, not only for its attractive harbour but also because of the striking original Venetian buildings, beautifully painted in contrasting pastel colours adorned with bright pink and red bougainvillaea, making the village stand out as one of the island's most popular destinations to visit. The harbour walk is a must and if you follow the headland around you will eventually come to the small but pretty Zavalata Beach, located just beyond the excavated Roman cemetery – a must see for those interested in archeology.
Along the delightful waterfront one can find plenty of cafés to enjoy a morning coffee and delicious fresh Greek pastry made in one of the local bakeries. There is an abundance of tavernas to choose from for lunch or dinner, serving not only the catch of the day but traditional local cuisine including Kefalonia’s famous meat pie, a must for anyone visiting the island to sample. We might be biased but a more delightful setting to sit back, relax and watch the world go by, we think would be hard to find anywhere else in the world! Fiskardo is not only a place to relax but is also bursting with things to see and do.
At night Fiskardo comes alive, taking on an entirely different atmosphere. The lights of the old buildings, cafés, bars and restaurants all combine to provide a magical Mediterranean setting. Of all the villages on Kefalonia, Fiskardo stands out as having a unique ambience, especially on a summer evening, families out for their evening stroll, folk dining in one of the waterfront tavernas or enjoying a cocktail or two at one of the many bars. Fiskardo, a stunning harbour for you to enjoy a most perfect stay, in one of Greece’s most elegant and picturesque ports.
