Holidays in Gaios
A charming harbour village known for its colourful waterfront, Venetian architecture, and bustling atmosphere
Gaios, the vibrant capital and main port of the island, buzzes with activity as ferries, caiques, and yachts dock, yet it retains its quaint charm. Surrounded by the small islands of Agios Nikolaos and Panagia, both accessible by a regular sea taxi service and worth a visit, Gaios offers a glimpse into its historic past. Agios Nikolaos, a short 50 meters from the harbour, showcases the ruins of a 1423 Venetian fortress. Panagia, recognisable by its striking, white-walled church, is central to Paxos's national festival celebrations every August 15th. The port area, with its array of shops, tavernas, and restaurants in pedestrian-only lanes, pulses as the heart of island life. An early morning visit is recommended for easier parking and the enticing smells of fresh bread and coffee. Additionally, this time is perfect for embarking on boat trips to nearby Antipaxos, Corfu, or the beautiful Epiros Coast.
