Naval- Folklore Museum

Located within Vathy, beneath the historic 1923 electric power station, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Ithaka's rich naval history and cultural heritage. Displaying a diverse collection of paintings and artifacts, visitors can explore the island's maritime traditions spanning centuries.

Among the exhibits are naval apparatuses and instruments, showcasing the tools and technologies used by sailors throughout history. Additionally, the museum features folklore gatherings, providing insight into the daily lives and customs of Ithaka's inhabitants during the 20th century.

The Cave of the Nymphs

Located south of Vathy, tucked away between Aetos and Dexia Beach, lies the Marble Cave (Cave of the Nymphs), renowned for its intriguing mythology and natural beauty. With two entrances, folklore suggests that one was reserved for mortals while the other served as a passageway for the gods.

Venturing along a narrow path from either entrance, visitors are greeted by a spacious chamber measuring 7m wide. Illuminated by natural light streaming through an opening in the ceiling, the chamber is adorned with vibrant stalactites and stalagmites, creating a mesmerizing display of colour and texture.

Exploring the depths of the cave, it's advisable to carry a torch or flashlight to navigate through the intricate passages and find your way back to the surface. The Monastery of Kathara

Nestled high on the slopes of Neritos, Ithaka's tallest peak, lies the serene Monastery of Kathara. Accessible via a winding loop road branching off from Aetos beach, this 16th-century sanctuary offers a peaceful retreat amidst stunning natural surroundings. Ascending to the monastery, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views from the bell tower near the church, overlooking Molos Bay and Vathy harbour below.

The vista extends beyond the shimmering sea, encompassing the Gulf of Corinth and the majestic mountains of the Peloponnese, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. Continuing along the road, travellers pass through the secluded village of Anoghi, where an unassuming small church reveals a hidden gem: a remarkable collection of late 15th-century frescoes, adding to the cultural richness of the journey.
