Villa Kalypso

It is not difficult to see why Vathy has been such a popular port of call for visitors over the centuries, some of them not so welcome. Its deep harbour, sheltered on all sides by high hills with its narrow entrance, is still a perfect haven for seafarers, but is also the administrative centre for this fascinating island and has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the friendliest towns in the Ionian.

This recently built spacious villa with its own infinity pool, situated just outside the town, enjoys superb views across the harbour to the wooded hillsides beyond and the mountain village of Perachori. It enjoys the best of both worlds or, more accurately three, as it is only a few minutes drive from the main town square or plateia, the hub of island life with shops, banks, post office and many waterfront tavernas and kafenions, yet is surrounded by old vine terraces that have become wild flower and herb gardens. Pristine beaches such as Filiatro and Gidakhi can be reached by recently restored footpaths and if the walk back after a day of sunbathing and swimming seems a step too far then regular taxi boats will bring you home.

However, for those essential lazier days, time spent beside the pool, or on the bedroom balconies watching the comings and goings on land and water is equally attractive. Waking up in the morning as the town below comes to life, perhaps even strolling down to the little beach at Loutsa for an early morning dip before wandering into town for some fresh baked bread and an essential espresso, is sheer delight.

It took Odysseus many hard years to return to his island. Nowadays, you can discover why he so desperately wanted to get back in a matter of hours, and this villa is waiting and ready to welcome you on your own private Odyssey!
